Being out on your own for the first time can be a great experience, however spending money on things you really don't need can leave you strapped for cash. Think through what you are going to spend your money on to avoid getting into debt and not falling into the vicious noodle eating circle.

Join A Credit Union.

Don't just sign up to the first bank you see at registration. Go into town and look at what the local credit union can offer you. They often offer many student friendly deals and being part of a credit union can benefit you even after college life is over.

Do Not Get A Credit Card

Getting a credit card while in college is a fools game. Their interest rates are sky high and falling into debt is almost inevitable unless you have a large cash-flow. It is never a good idea to use a credit card as a quick fix.

Save and then spend.

If there is something that you have to have like the latest iPhone or Xbox, save up for it. If there is something that you have to have like the latest iPhone or Xbox, save up for it. You will appreciate it more & won't have repayments or debt hanging over you.

Pay Your Bills On Time

It may seem like common sense but it can be so easy to let things slide. If you pay your bills as soon as you get them then they are out of the way & you no longer have to worry about them. Late payments can lead to late fees as well as the stress that comes with it.

On Campus

It's easy to lose track of how much you spend on day to day things that you need for college. Here are some tips:

Buy used textbooks. Some are like new, and even if they're worn a little, it is a great way to save money.

Stay for R.A.G Week. By the time you've paid for the travel and gone out back home, you have already spent a small fortune. Staying for R.A.G week is a great experience with lots of events and tickets are always sold at competitive prices. Plus, all proceeds go charity!

Live without a car. Cars are extremely expensive to run. By the time you have paid for tax, insurance, NCT and the petrol or diesel, you are probably completely broke. That's not even including the cost of the car! Stay in walking distance of your campus and maybe car pool instead.

Not everyone has the same amounts of money. You or one of friends may not have as much money as others. This is ok. Don't feel pressured to spend more money than you have, and don't pressure those who don't have as much. Money issues will face many students so be aware that whatever your situation, you're not alone.

Take advantage of campus activities. There are many free activities on campus that you can avail of. The students' union run many events and campaigns throughout the year for free. They are fun and a great way to learn new things. Clubs and societies are free to join and are a great way to meet like-minded people. They run every week and are a great way to get involved in college life.

Make use of your Student Card. Lots of shops and online sites offer student discounts once you produce your student card. Make use of this as much as possible and don't be afraid to ask if a student discount is available.
